Face Forward

This series is a reaction to the pervasiveness of digital self-portraits on social media. I have attempted to co-opt the classical “archetype-ness” and hedonism of selfie culture and translate them to analogue paint and paper. The subjects are presented as disembodied sculpture-style “bust” with exaggerated features and line work to playfully mimic the digital filter distortions of Tik Tok, Instagram and others.

As always, I am influenced by southern outsider artists like R. A. Miller and Reverend Howard Finster; Max Fleischer Studios; southern Neo-Classic style; and DIY Zine culture. I also have an obsession with process and compulsion to work in a series rather than solitary images.
